Daily Ride – Manifestation contre la limitation de vitesse en moto à bordeaux part 2

And then there’s Bordeaux. Let’s not forget these folks!

So, I was on a ride in the Santa Cruz Mountains…

… riding pillion behind a fairly inexperienced driver, who had only recently gotten their license… and a fairly large BMW.

Sorry, don’t know the model — it was over 20 years ago, and all I really remember was that it was white and new, and it was too big for the driver.

Anyway, I was on a ride with a gathering of a bunch of motorcycle clubs who had converged on a camp to hang out, party, dance, and ride. And seeing as I was working the gig with some friends of mine who were providing some of the entertainment, I was invited along for an afternoon of rolling through the Santa Cruz Mountains, and on down to the Santa Cruz boardwalk.

Amazing. What an afternoon. Just riding along, as free as anything… never mind that my driver almost got us hit a couple of times because they weren’t quite as defensive as they might have been. But what the hell. I’m still here.

Anyway, all of a sudden, I smell brakes burning. You know the smell — asbestos brake pads vaporizing under plates… white smoke coming off the back of a bike up ahead… Others smelled it, too, and then it was, Whoah there – let’s pull over.

We did, and we spent the next 20 minutes trying to figure out what was going on. Both the driver and their passenger said the bike felt weird. Not as responsive as they’d like. It was taking longer to slow down and come to a stop. They said it must be the brakes.

“It’s your brakes,” I said. My nose knows.

How-ever, as I’m not a seasoned rider, nobody actually took me seriously, because after all, what does some pedestrian/cager like me know?

In the end, it turned out okay, because the rider offloaded their passenger to another bike, and we all took it slow back to the camp. We arrived safely.

And that’s all that really matters.

Comrade Mayor of Paris to outlaw motorcycles built before 2000

Now, this is interesting. Time for another protest! I wonder if it’s going to be hard to find a moto taxi at CDG during April…

Generic French Motorcycle Protest Generic French Motorcycle Protest

In a bid to reduce pollution in the city, the Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo (a Socialist of course) is attempting to ban all motorcycle produced before 2000. She is also going to ban cars built before 1996. From what I can tell, as there has been little English reporting on this (or at least that is what Google reports), she pulled the dates for those bans from her …. Thin air.

This ban is all about age as it does not allow for upgrading your vehicles to current EU exhaust standards. But, if you cannot afford a new vehicle Paris will help you finance a new one or provide you accommodation on public transport.

So from my limited results research I was able to discern the following:

  1. The poor citizens of Paris are out of luck buying cheap vehicles.
  2. Any small businesses working on retrofitting…

Advice to warriors :

Do your job with your mind as taut as an iron bow strung with wire.

This is the same as Zen meditation.

If I lived to ride, I would be so antsy, right about now.

I’m up here in the northeastern USA, waiting for yet another big storm to roll on through.

We’ve been getting absolutely socked with snow, which means there are a lot of plows on the roads… and not many motorcycles.

Not much room for a motorcycle here… (Source: Northernstar.info)

I’m a pretty inveterate “cager”, making the rounds in life in my little commuter car, but I can well imagine what it must be like to be sidelined during the winter months, while white stuff fills the roads and makes riding impossible.

I do get antsy, myself, during the spring, summer and fall, as I’m an avid snowshoer. But obviously, it’s not the same. Snowshoes… motorcycle… yah, not much comparison there.

Still, I can imagine how many folks are watching their calendars, just waiting for spring, so they can ride again.

Starting Off Right!

For those of you considering buying a motorcycle, here are some awesome tips. Plus, the folks in the picture below look super cool in their shirt sleeves and sunny weather.

This is the post that I’ve promised you for a long time.

Time to buy a motorcycle:

Starting from Scratch?  New or Used?  Custom?  Classic?  Where to start?

We’ll share some thoughts and insight on buying a new bike.  Our thoughts on that are likely different from a lot of other motorcycle stores on the planet.  We all sell motorcycles, sure, and that IS important.  All motorcycle manufacturer’s and the stores that represent them embrace (at least they should,) support, and ultimately sell the lifestyle that they promote.  The wonderful brands that we’re fortunate enough to represent here are not really any different.  What is different though is what that “lifestyle” stands for.

Currently, the new brands that we represent are BMW and Ducati, though there is a mystery manufacturer coming soon.  All of which have a lifestyle that revolves around enjoying the ride, performance, and handling characteristics of those…
